traveling with petsTraveling with your Golden Retriever –  A Comprehensive Guide

Traveling with your Golden dog or puppy can be an exciting and rewarding experience. However, it also requires careful planning and preparation to ensure the safety and well-being of your companion.  We will provide you with essential information and tips to make your travels with your puppy or dog a smooth and enjoyable adventure.
1. Pre-Trip Preparation:
– Veterinary Check-Up: Schedule a visit to your veterinarian to ensure your puppy is in good health and up-to-date on vaccinations. Obtain a health certificate if necessary. (if flying is required)
– Identification and Microchipping: Ensure your Golden Retriever has a collar and identification tag containing your contact information. All of our puppies are microchipped as an added safety measure.
– Crate Training: Introduce your puppy to a travel crate in advance, making it a comfortable and secure space.
2. Choosing the Right Transportation Method:
– Car Travel: Secure your dog in a well-ventilated crate or use a safety harness to prevent them from roaming freely inside the car.

– Air Travel: Research airline policies and requirements for traveling with pets. Choose a pet-friendly airline and book well in advance. Acclimate your puppy to the travel crate to reduce anxiety.

We have found that American Airlines is the most accommodating regarding the weight and size of a Golden Retriever puppy.  The puppy must be at least 8 weeks old and under 20lbs (including the travel carrier)

JSX is an airline that has limited routes; however, you can fly with your dog in the cabin if they are under 79 lbs with guidelines: https://www.jsx.com/petpolicy

3. Packing Essentials:
– Food and Water: Bring an ample supply of your dog’s regular food and bottled water to avoid sudden changes in diet.
– Medications and First Aid Kit: Carry any necessary medications, flea/tick preventives, and a basic first aid kit.
– Comfort Items: Pack familiar blankets, toys, and a leash to provide a sense of familiarity and comfort.
4. Ensuring Comfort and Safety During Travel:
– Rest Breaks: Plan frequent breaks for your Golden to stretch their legs, relieve themselves, and stay hydrated.
– Never Leave Your Dog Alone: Never leave your dog or puppy unattended in a parked car or hotel room. Always keep them in sight or use pet-friendly establishments and accommodations.
– Safety in Public Spaces: Use a leash and harness when walking your dog in unfamiliar places. Be cautious of potential hazards and keep a close eye on them.
5. Accommodations and Destinations:

– Pet-Friendly Accommodations: Research and book accommodations that are welcoming to dogs. Check for pet policies, additional fees, and nearby green spaces for exercise.

When traveling with a puppy, we love Element by Marriott Hotel.  Their studio rooms have hardwood floors in the main area, and it’s an easy-to-block-off sleeping area with an ex-pen/crate to protect the carpet.Traveling with pets crates

– Destination Planning: Choose destinations that offer dog-friendly attractions, parks, and walking trails for enjoyable experiences with your dog.
6. Keeping Your Golden Calm and Relaxed:
– Familiar Smells: Bring items with familiar scents from home to help your dog feel secure and calm.
– Exercise and Mental Stimulation: Engage your dog in physical exercise and mental stimulation during your travels to keep them happy and reduce anxiety.
Traveling with your dog or puppy requires careful planning, but with the right preparations and considerations, it can be a wonderful experience for both you and your companion. Follow the tips outlined in this guide to ensure a safe, comfortable, and memorable journey with your dog or puppy. Happy travels!

English Cream Golden Retriever Photo Shot Guide

Taking pictures of English Cream Golden Retriever Puppies is even more challenging due to their coloring. If the sun is shining just right, the puppy’s coat can look washed out. If the flash goes off at the right angle, the puppy can look like it has “gold” on its coat and there is none to the eye. Read more here: Puppy Photo Tips
