Crate and Ex-Pen Training Your Puppy crate and ex-pen training sets the stage for lifelong success. With patience, consistency, and positive reinforcement, your puppy will come to see these spaces not as confinement, but as comfort zones.Crate & Ex-Pen Training Your Puppy: Building Comfort and Routine with a Gentle Positive Start

At Wisteria Goldens, we’ve learned over the years that one of the most effective ways to help puppies transition smoothly into their new homes is by using a crate and exercise pen (ex-pen) setup. This combination provides your puppy with the security of a crate (their den) while offering the extra space of the pen for stretching, chewing, and playing safely when you can’t supervise closely.

When introduced gradually and positively, this setup creates calm, confidence, and routine—three essentials for raising a happy, well-adjusted Golden.

Why Use Both?
  • The Crate: A safe, cozy spot for naps, nighttime sleep, and learning to self-soothe.
  • The Ex-Pen: A secure play area giving freedom while still maintaining boundaries.
  • The Combo: Together, they prevent accidents, reduce chewing on unwanted things, and create a structured space that feels safe for your puppy.
Step One: Introduce the Crate Gently
Start during the day with the crate door open. Place a treat, toy, or chew inside. Allow your puppy to come and go freely. If needed, encourage them to go in with gentle coaxing using a treat, chew bone, or favorite toy. Once they’re comfortable, begin closing the door for short sessions.
If your puppy whines, resist the urge to let them out immediately. Instead, talk soothingly, slip your fingers through the bars if necessary, and wait until they calm down. When you open the crate, always pair it with praise and a reward. This teaches that calm behavior gets rewarded.

Step Two: Create the Ex-Pen Space
Set up the ex-pen around the crate so your puppy can go in and out when the crate door is open. Include:
  • A comfy bed or mat in the crate
  • Safe chew toys in both the crate and pen
  • A bowl of fresh water
  • Feed your puppy in the ex-pen

This setup is especially helpful during the day when you’re busy—your puppy is safe, contained, and learning healthy boundaries without needing constant supervision.

Calming Tools for Success

We also use calming aids, such as iCalmPet. From their earliest days of nursing, we play this soothing music to create positive associations. Later, during crate and ex-pen training, the familiar sounds help calm puppies when they feel fussy or restless.

Sample Crate + Ex-Pen Training Schedule (First Week)
Morning
  • Wake Up & Potty: Straight outside after waking.
  • Breakfast & Playtime: Feed, then allow supervised play.
  • First Crate Session (5–10 minutes): Place a toy in the crate, close the door briefly, and praise calm behavior.
Mid-Morning
  • Potty Break & Play: Outside for potty, then some interaction and playtime
  • Ex-Pen Time (15–20 minutes): Place them in the pen with toys and chews. Allow the crate door to open so they can rest inside if they choose.
Afternoon
  • Potty & Lunch (if on 3 meals/day).
  • Nap Time in Crate (30–45 minutes): After play, guide them to nap in the crate with soothing background music.
Early Evening
  • Potty & Play: Time outdoors.
  • Short Crate Practice (10 minutes): Door closed with a toy or chew. Stay nearby.
Dinner & Evening
  • Dinner, Potty, Family Playtime.
  • Ex-Pen Session (20–30 minutes): Use toys, chews, and calm interaction. Keep the crate door open so they can self-select it for rest.
Nighttime
  • Bedtime Potty.
  • Overnight in Crate: A Crate near your bed helps your puppy feel secure. If they fuss, calm, gentle shushing can help them relax.  Take them out quietly if they wake and need to potty.
Key Reminders:
  • Puppies should not be confined for more than 2 hours at a time during the day.
  • Always wait for calm before letting them out.
  • A tired puppy learns best—plan crate/ex-pen time after play sessions.
  • Let a sleeping puppy sleep—don’t wake for potty unless they stir.
The Benefits
  • The crate + ex-pen setup builds confidence and independence while also protecting your home (and sanity!). It creates a balanced environment where your puppy feels safe, learns structure, and can relax. This foundation helps them grow into calm, well-adjusted companions.
  • It is also a GREAT training tool.  Utilizing the door, you can teach a puppy to sit, wait, and off commands.
At Wisteria Goldens, crate and ex-pen training sets the stage for lifelong success. With patience, consistency, and positive reinforcement, your puppy will come to see these spaces not as confinement, but as comfort zones.
