Happy Saturday! It’s hot, humid, and miserable outside. Puppies are growing, and we still wait for girls to come into heat. The grandsons came again this week to help with all the yardwork—we love having teenagers around again.
We hope everyone had a great Fourth of July celebration with family and friends (or a nice, quiet one if preferred). We had a quiet celebration around here this year. Our 4th of July has always been at my dad’s, but since he is no longer with us, we decided to start new traditions. Since the holiday fell in the middle of the week, we are having our family gathering today at Heather’s.
Oh, it is so hot out there. Walking outside, the air is humid, even first thing in the morning. For those who know me, I’m not too fond of the hot, humid summers in Arkansas. I’m already missing the cooler weather and longing for fall.
Gracie has been such a good first-time mama. She loves her puppies and has been doing great laying down away from them and the puppies coming to her until a few days ago. She decided to sit up while nursing and we know from experience this can be a time when pups get underneath her. The puppies are toddling well, and that helps, along with us watching her so closely, but Teal girl got underneath her before we realized it and didn’t make it. We have the whelping board, but Gracie had pulled up a bit of the pad, and the combination of the pad not being flat and Gracie lying the way she was, the puppy couldn’t move. It was just a few minutes and happened so fast. Losing a puppy is a hard part of raising puppies.
On Wednesday, the puppies turned two weeks old. They are doing well toddling and moving around the whelping room. This next week, they will start interacting more with each other, and it’s fun to watch them explore and learn more about their world. |
