Online Version Wisteria Tails July 29. Find out who we moved to our formal training program, New Blog Post: Benefits of Adopting an Older Puppy, Updates, Traveling to Meet Families, and More Ranch News.
Life has been busy, so finding it hard to connect each week. We’ve been talking a lot about our puppies and planned litters. The weather is incredibly hot and brings outdoor training challenges.
It’s been years since we’ve had “toddler” puppies. We’ve talked to several families about getting an older puppy vs. an eight-week-old and felt it would be beneficial to families to have different points to consider, and wrote a blog post on some benefits of an older puppy.
You can read it here: Benefits of Getting an Older Puppy
Older puppies require lots of work to provide a solid foundation of socialization and household manners, and they need attention, play, love, etc. The time required, as well as the heat, has made training sessions a challenge.
It is hard to do leash lessons in this heat. We’ve been doing them indoors, down hallways, etc., to get some done. Doing car rides, usually includes stopping and going for a short walk, checking out traffic etc. but with the heat the pups want no part of it (and we don’t either)
We had an abundance of puppies this season, however, we had multiple families unable to take a puppy they had already committed to for various reasons. This combination has created a challenge for us with having older puppies and deciding whether or not to breed our females that are due to come into heat anytime now. We have families that have placed deposits for upcoming litters, but, not sure how to bring in more puppies when we are busy working and training the older ones we still have. We are figuring out options and it all depends on timing of the girls heats and how many puppies we have at that time.
We have been doing this for 19 years and have never been in this situation. There is much to consider as we move forward this year. If you know anyone that is interested in an older puppy send them our way!
We’ve moved some males and females into our formal training program. We picked a few based on how well they focus and pick up commands to make it easier on us. We will continue to work with the the other pups, but not in the same concentrated way.

We made a quick turn around trip to Dallas to take Finn (Misty’s Blue Boy) to his new family. It makes for a long day, but have a family coming to meet Josie tomorrow, so needed to get back.
