Occasionally we are asked about the English Cream Golden Retriever’s IQ and we would like to discuss the facts about our dog’s intelligence. There are many IQ tests online which state you can test your dog’s IQ by simply timing a few exercises to see how long it will take your dog to correctly respond to each test. If you follow any of these tests, which we don’t recommend, we’d like you to consider revising the definition of the test results.
But, first…a reminder:

We would like you to think about your dog’s IQ in a different way from now on. The possibility of your dog’s IQ being gauged by an online IQ test is 1 in 90 (in our opinion). We would approach the test with a revised final result definition such as, ‘the pet parent’s ability to communicate with their dog and develop a mutually incredible relationship is…_____” (insert IQ results).
The reason for our opinion is our experience with our dogs. We are repeatedly reminded our dogs are wired to please us and they are innately extremely intelligent. Our job as pet parents is to learn how to communicate with them and to develop a relationship they will trust and depend upon. As a result of our commitment to learn how to develop a relationship our dogs will have a great desire to please us.
English Cream Golden Retriever’s IQ Positive Attentive Involved Pet Parents Are:
- Patient
- Kind
- Persistent
- Perceptive
- Attentive
- Dependable
- Inclusive
- Affectionate
- Self Confident
- Caring, and
- Understanding.
They will learn how to develop a positive relationship built upon mutual respect and the understanding our dogs are wired to please us and our job is to communicate with them (through positive and consistent ways) what exactly we are pleased about.
So before you give your dog an IQ test and label him/her with an IQ number think of ways to improve your communication skills with your dog and watch yourself intently to determine if there is an issue how are you or the environment possibly confusing the channel of communication.
